Vitamin D: Are you Getting Enough?

Sick of being tired, feeling weak and fatigued? If you are, your like many of the patients that I see in and out of the office on a weekly basis. What most of my patients don’t realize is the deficiency of nutrients, vitamins and minerals in their bodies as result of their diet. Sometimes, in order to correct this, often a total diet makeover is required along with a thorough nutritional consultation.

More often than not I see the same results. Increase levels of this, severe decreased levels of that. Yet, what patients and most people dont realize is that there are simple changes that can make a big difference. One of those changes is getting your body enough Vitamin D. Only 10 years ago, Vitamin D was seen with very little importance by the medical community. However, in the last 10 years research has shown how big of role Vitamin D plays in our bodies.

Vitamin D also known as the “sunshine vitamin” plays an important role in calcium absorption of  the bones, helps maintain proper function of the brain and has even been shown to play a role in weight loss. More importantly increased levels of Vitamin D (D3 specifically) have shown to help boost energy and increase immunity, preventing those feelings of lethargic and fatigue.

Make sure your getting enough Vitamin D. Current FDA recommendations have just gone up from 400 IU’s a day to 600 IU’s a day. Unfortunately, these recommendations are still not enough.

Most adults should be taking at least 1000-3000 IU’s daily.
