Tendonitis:  Tendonitis typically occurs from overuse of a tendon.  While the name actually only refers to tendon injuries, it is commonly referred to for joint and muscle injuries also.  When a tendon is overused, it becomes inflamed leading to pain and swelling in the area.

Sprain/Strains:  Sprain/strains are the most common sports injury.  A sprain occurs when a ligament (attach bones together) tears.  Ankles are the most common area to sprain, but they can occur anywhere throughout the body.  If ligaments in the spine are torn it can result in a more serious injury such as bulged or herniated disc.

Tears in the muscles or tendons (attach muscles to bones) are called strains.  Strains usually occur from overextension or twisting of a joint.   Plantar fasciitis is a common strain injury and occurs in the arch of the foot.  When the ligament that connects your heel bone to your toe bone is overused, it can become inflamed and swollen causing severe pain.

Shin Splints:  Shin splints are caused by overuse of shin bone known as the tibia.  Shin splints occur most commonly in runners, but can happen to other athletes.

Sports injuries tend to be easy to diagnose, as most athletes know when the injury occurred during their training.  Physical examination, ultrasound and x-rays help pinpoint an exact diagnosis and can help your chiropractor develop an appropriate treatment plan.  Sometimes an MRI may be ordered.

Chiropractic care has been proven effective at decreasing the healing time of sports injuries.  It has also been proven helpful in preventing sports injuries in the first place.  Visiting your local chiropractor is a good idea before starting or switching a workout or training program.
