Dr. Robert Hansen has been a part of the West End Chiropractic and Wellness team since October 2019. In 2020, he is already starting to make a change not only in the clinic, but in the community as well.

“People need our help. We are here to educate and empower people to lead the healthiest lives they can.”

His first step is the Healthy Teacher Initiative. This program allows Dr. Robert to speak with teachers face to face about how we can help with their everyday health.

“[It’s] our attempt to make children’s environment a healthy place. By helping teachers achieve their health goals and taking care of them I strongly believe their students will also learn to value their health.”

Dr. Robert is also enjoying working with housing properties throughout the St. Louis Park community.   Residents can receive a free fifteen minute stretching session with Dr. Robert for coming to one of his property events.

Yoga and the Brain – How Do they Connect?

We constantly hear how yoga can play a major role in not only our physical health, but our mental health as well. Although it’s a common answer given to many people struggling with anxiety and depression, it’s unclear as to how or why this form of exercise is so beneficial. Natural Ways to lower your Cortisol

At West End Chiropractic and Wellness we see a lot of patients that suffer from chronic or ongoing pain. For most we never stop to think about underlying hormonal issues and how they can effect our body. Cortisol is one the these hormones that can play serious role in how our body feels.

Cortisol is a hormone that is released within your body during stressful times. It is sent out during “fight or flight” instances along with your adrenaline. There is a time and place for cortisol to be present in your body but like anything else, too much turns into causing adverse effects on the inside and out.   1. Get more quality sleep – Over time, sleep deprivation causes increased levels of cortisol. Start trying to sleep on a regular schedule without the use of phones, tablets or T.V.’s before bedtime

Sacroiliac Joint Pain due to Sling Pattern Imbalance

Sacroiliac (SI) joint pain or lower back pain is a frequent condition seen in our office at West End Chiropractic and Wellness . SI join pain is commonly felt in the low back and buttocks. Today will discuss the anatomy of SI  joint pain and how the traditional medical thought process of SI joint pain (aging, genetics) is not always correct when diagnosing it and how understanding bio-mechanical patterns can lead to fixing this issue for many individuals.

What is sacroiliac joint pain?

The SI joints are located between the iliac bones and the sacrum, connecting the spine to the hips. The two joints provide support and stability, and play a major role in absorbing impact when walking and lifting. From the back, the SI joints are located below the waist where two dimples are visible.

Strong ligaments and muscles support the SI joints. There is a very small amount of motion in the joint for normal body flexibility. As we age our bones can become arthritic and ligaments can stiffen leading to pain in some cases.  The SI joint is a synovial joint filled with fluid. This type of joint has free nerve endings that can cause chronic pain if the joint degenerates or does not move properly (will come back to this as its important!)

Trauma not included, a majority of time Sacroiliac joint pain is caused by either inflammation, lack of motion (aka stiffness) and degeneration of the joint (arthritis).

What are the symptoms?

The signs and symptoms of SI pain start in the lower back and buttock, and may radiate to the lower hip, groin or upper thigh. While the pain is usually one sided, it can occur on both sides. Patients may also experience numbness or tingling in the leg or a feeling of weakness in the leg.

Symptoms may worsen with sitting, standing, sleeping, walking or climbing stairs. Often the SI joint is painful sitting or sleeping on the affected side. Some people have difficulty riding in a car or standing, sitting or walking too long. Pain can be worse with transitional movements (going from sit to stand), standing on one leg or doing chores around the house in which the body is moving positions.

How does SI joint pain start?

As we discussed prior, there can be a variety of causes for SI joint pain. If you take a visit to your local MD most often the diagnosis given will be as a result of trauma, or an auto immune issues (think rheumatoid arthritis) and sometimes from severe degeneration. All these issues can cause SI joint pain….but for the majority of people who suffer from SI joint pain it ultimately comes down to how their body moves. For most of us, our body do not move correctly.  When our bodies move incorrectly over time it will lead to inflammation, lack of range of motion (we came back to it) and ultimately pain!

Yes, you read that correct your SI joint pain or lower back pain can be from how your body is moving or rather not moving correctly! 

What movement pattern do I need to understand?

Lets back up for a moment and take a look at how the spine and pelvis move together (SI joints). When you move, when you walk, when you perform chores around the house your body moves in a rotational pattern.  In fact our pelvis twists with every single motion we do.

The hips and pelvis along with the legs and spine move in a three dimensional pattern. With our bodies in such complex patterns it requires multiple muscles, ligaments and bones to work and engage in certain order and manner.

When muscles, ligaments and bones work in a certain order we refer to it as a movement pattern. When we lack mobility or engagement of the muscles in rotation around the pelvis and low back (SI joints) we are having issues with our anterior or posterior sling patterns. This causes more load to be placed on the spine and SI joints, possibly leading to injury.

So to summarize, if you are suffering with low back or SI joint pain you may have a bio-mechanical pattern issue, specifically from the anterior and posterior sling patterns. By addressing these patterns we have been able to help thousands of patients get out of SI joint pain and avoid traditional medical treatments such as medicine and injections.

How Healthy is your Gut?

A Healthy Gut? Yeah, it seems weird but your Gut is essential to your overall well-being. Many times this aspect of well-being is overlooked because we simply don’t know the importance of how well cultured bacteria in our gut plays a role in our health. Mindfulness Techniques

At West End Chiropractic and Wellness we treat patients every day with a variety of health issues that are caused by a myriad of stressors and incidents. For many of our patients helping balance out the emotional side of the equation can help improve their healing significantly. Today we go over a few great meditation and mindfulness techniques.

Mindfulness Techniques

1.) Transcendental Meditation or “Mantra-based” Meditation

~ The idea with transcendental meditation is to reach enlightenment.

~ 2 x a day for 20, recommended one session be in the morning before you get going.

~ 3 syllable mantra, no words just sounds

~Eventually with practice you can uses your mantra as a way to calm yourself in any situation as it will trigger a parasympathetic response in nervous system.

2.) Affirmations and Visualization

~ Similar to transcendental meditation, you can use mantras that have specific wording to meditate with.

~Helpful when a certain issue is causing you stress.

~This process helps with detaching from learned tendencies to worry/fear/be stressed out by things out of our control. (PS most of the things we worry about never happen)

Example: if money or paying bills is causing stress, hold the mantra “I have everything I need to be safe in my life” or “Abundance comes to me easy and effortlessly”

~Quieting the mind takes practice, if the mind can’t stay with mantra with ease, visualization is helpful.

~Hold imagery in your head of things that make you happy, or how you look totally fulfilled in life.

3.) Moving consciousness throughout the body.

~ There are 7 main energy centers (that we know of) in the body, often called chakras.

~ In a mindfulness session, bring you conscious awareness from your head and into the throat, heart, gut, sacrum, or feet.

~Putting a light hand on region can help lead your consciousness into these areas.

~You can also use this technique to consciously assess pain throughout your day. Bringing awareness to the area instead of reacting the pain.

Easy Tips for everyday meditation. 

1.) Ritualize it!

2.) Be aware of your breath as often as you can and deepen it. (Studies have shown that if you take more than 14 breathes per minute your brain thinks its in survival mode and triggers sympathetic nervous system.)

3.) Give yourself space to not be perfect at it for a while. A lot of people give up because they get frustrated with not being able to sit still or quiet the mind. It takes time, so if your mind wanders let it and more importantly don’t stress about it doing so (that is why having a mantra can bring you back as the mind wanders).

4.) Brain/heart harmonizing… takes 3 minutes.
